A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

As a Special Education Teacher with our nonprofit, you're responsible for overseeing the education and training of students with physical, emotional, mental, and learning disabilities. You design and deliver lessons geared toward the individual needs and capabilities of each student in conjunction with grade-level standards. To help students continuously improve, you collaborate with other classroom teachers, school psychologists, various specialists, and school social workers to provide individualized integrated plans.

In addition, you set learning goals for each student, assess their progress, and record your evaluations. You update parents on the progress of their students as well as enlist parental support with behavior control and home activities designed to supplement their classroom lessons. As needed, you also supervise and train teaching assistants. You enjoy having a job that directly impacts the lives of students with disabilities in a positive manner, which is why you excel in this position!

 

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

  • College degree
  • Teacher of the Handicapped (TOH) or equivalent certification
