MAKE A DIFFERENCE AS A WASTEWATER TREATMENT OPERATOR

As a Wastewater Treatment Operator, you're responsible for operating and maintaining the potable water and wastewater systems at our camp. This includes monitoring equipment, treating and distributing potable water, operating and repairing equipment, and submitting wastewater compliance records. You perform laboratory tests to assure compliance. Safety is of the utmost importance, so you perform thorough risk assessments before every job and stop unsafe work immediately as needed.

You can expect to work 12-hour shifts as part of a scheduled rotation, providing around-the-clock coverage. With attention to detail, you take and maintain inventory. You also meticulously help with developing and reviewing all plant operation documentation. You love the variety in your job and the opportunity to perform a wide range of maintenance tasks throughout the camp. You get great satisfaction checking off tasks each day!


REQUIREMENTS FOR A WASTEWATER TREATMENT OPERATOR

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Vocational training or previous maintenance experience in a similar position
  • State of Alaska wastewater certification II or higher
  • State of Alaska water treatment certification II or higher
  • Commitment to developing skills to advance in certification levels
  • Experience working in facility maintenance and safely operating hand and power tools
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and contract-specific software
  • Ability to safely operate various hand and power tools
  • A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record for the past three years to be eligible under NMS' vehicle insurance policy
  • Must pass all pre-employment contract requirements which may include a drug test, physical and fit for duty assessment, and hearing test. Applicants not located near a testing facility are responsible for paying for travel to the nearest one.
  • Ability to cooperate and work as part of a team with coworkers, customers, and clients
  • Ability to make decisions in the moment with little supervision
  • Ability to be on your feet for 12 hours per shift
  • Ability to live in dormitory-style settings and meet cleanliness requirements of the camp
  • Ability to speak, understand, read, and write English
  • Meet and adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations set forth by the company and client

CANDIDATES RESIDING OUTSIDE ANCHORAGE:

Candidates in Alaska and the lower 48 for any contract: For the purposes of pre-employment testing, Anchorage is considered the point of hire (except drug testing, which is conducted near the candidate's residence). Employee is responsible for travel expenses and needed accommodations related to pre−employment tasks that need to be completed in Anchorage. This includes safety training requirements, required pre−employment testing and/or training such as physical, DOT physical/medical card, fit for duty, audiogram, or other testing required by contract/company (NSTC, APICC training, security licensing requirements, etc.).

Candidates in Alaska for Alyeska Contract: pre-employment testing will be scheduled near the candidate's area of residence within the state. The only exception is when the candidate lives in a region without the necessary service providers to complete all requirements.

Flights to Remote Locations: Employees are responsible for expenses related to reporting to point of hire (Anchorage) for scheduled trips paid for by the company for remote locations.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoor/Outdoor. Frequently exposed to arctic conditions.

Noise level: Moderate to loud

Description of environment: Remote camp setting. Employees must constantly be able to stand, walk, climb, push, pull use hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Employees are occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.

Travel: Must be able to travel by plane or bus to remote camps.

Fit For Duty Test

  • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to knuckle x 2
  • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist x 2
  • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to shoulder x 2
  • Carry: Carry 25 lbs. with one hand for a distance of 100 feet.
  • Push and Pull tests: Push and pull horizontally with a peak force of 90 f-lbs. with two hands.
  • Stoop & Twist: Perform alternate cross-over toe touches x 5 on each side, self-paced but continuous.
  • Squat Test: Functionally squat x 5, self-paced but continuous.
  • Kneel: Kneel on one knee and stand. Return to kneel on opposite knee. Repeat alternate kneeling sequence x 5 for each knee, self-paced but continuous.
  • Stairs: Climb up and down 19 steps x 2 for a total of 38 steps, self-paced but continuous.
  • Stairs & Carry: Climb up and down 19 steps x 1 while carrying 50 lbs. in one hand and using the other hand to grasp a railing for safety, self-paced.
  • Slanted Ladder: Climb a slanted ladder with 9 rungs x 2 repetitions for a total of 18 rungs, self-paced but continuous.
  • Shoveling: Perform a shovel test for three (3) minutes self-paced but continuous using a standard snow shovel with a 3 lb. weight attached to the shovel blade. (e.g. sandbag weight securely taped to the shovel blade.)
