A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CAMP UTILITY OPERATOR

As a Camp Utility Operator, you work on a 12-hour rotational schedule with other members of our maintenance team to ensure that camp utilities run smoothly. Your day-to-day maintenance tasks include building structures, maintaining and repairing equipment, and conducting laboratory testing to ensure potable water and wastewater treatment systems are functioning properly. You're also responsible for offloading chemicals. You carefully perform a thorough risk assessment before every job - this is part of why you're such a great Camp Utility Operator!

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A CAMP UTILITY OPERATOR

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Class B CDL with tanker endorsement
  • Vocational training or previous maintenance experience in a similar position
  • State of Alaska wastewater certification III or higher
  • State of Alaska water treatment certification III or higher
  • Commitment to developing skills to advance in certification levels
  • Experience working in facility maintenance and safely operating hand and power tools
  • Basic computer skills to include Microsoft Office and contract-specific software
  • Ability to safely operate various hand and power tools
  • Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record for the past three years to be eligible under NMS' vehicle insurance policy
  • Pass all pre-employment contract requirements, including drug tests, physical assessments, and hearing tests. Applicants not located near a testing facility are responsible for paying for travel to the nearest one.
  • Ability to cooperate and work with coworkers, customers, and clients
  • Ability to make decisions in the moment with little supervision
  • Ability to be on your feet for 12 hours per shift
  • Ability to live in dormitory-style settings and meet cleanliness requirements of the camp
  • Ability to speak, understand, read, and write English
  • Meet and adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations set forth by the company and client

CANDIDATES RESIDING OUTSIDE ANCHORAGE:

Candidates in Alaska and the lower 48 for any contract: For pre-employment testing, Anchorage is considered the point of hire (except for drug testing, which will be conducted near the candidate's place of residence). Employee is responsible for travel expenses and needed accommodations related to pre−employment tasks that need to be completed in Anchorage. This includes safety training requirements, required pre−employment testing or training such as physical, DOT physical/medical card, fit for duty, audiogram, or other testing required by contract/company (NSTC, APICC training, security licensing requirements, etc.).

Candidates in Alaska for Alyeska Contract: pre-employment testing is scheduled near the candidate's area of residence within the state. The only exception is when the candidate lives in a region without the necessary service providers to complete all requirements.

Flights to Remote Locations: Employees are responsible for expenses related to reporting to point of hire for scheduled trips paid for by the company for remote locations.

Working Conditions

Weather: Indoor/Outdoor. Frequently exposed to arctic conditions.

Noise level: Moderate to loud

Description of environment: Remote camp setting. Employees must constantly be able to stand, walk, climb, push, pull use hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Employees are occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.

Travel: Must be able to travel by plane or bus to remote camps.

Fit for Duty Test

  • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to knuckle x 2
  • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist x 2
  • Lift: Lift 50 lbs. from floor to shoulder x 2
  • Carry: Carry 25 lbs. with one hand for a distance of 100 feet
  • Push and Pull tests: Push and pull horizontally with a peak force of 90 f-lbs. with two hands.
  • Stoop & Twist: Perform alternate cross-over toe touches x 5 on each side, self-paced but continuous.
  • Squat Test: Functionally squat x 5, self-paced but continuous.
  • Kneel: Kneel on one knee and stand. Return to kneel on the opposite knee. Repeat alternate kneeling sequence x 5 for each knee, self-paced but continuous.
  • Stairs: Climb up and down 19 steps x 2 for a total of 38 steps, self-paced but continuous.
  • Stairs & Carry: Climb up and down 19 steps x 1 while carrying 50 lbs. in one hand and using the other hand to grasp a railing for safety, self-paced.
  • Slanted Ladder: Climb a slanted ladder with 9 rungs x 2 repetitions for a total of 18 rungs, self-paced but continuous.
  • Shoveling: Perform a shovel test for three (3) minutes self-paced but continuous using a standard snow shovel with a 3 lb. weight attached to the shovel blade. (e.g. sandbag weight securely taped to the shovel blade.)
