A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FOOD SERVICE MANAGER

As a Food Service Manager, you assist in overseeing culinary operations for K-12 school nutrition services. You engage with village production teams on a daily basis and travel to smaller villages outside of Kotzebue. Other duties include menu planning, ordering inventory, developing recipes, and training the culinary staff. A natural leader, you assist with hiring and help to create an effective staff-training program. Our team looks to you for guidance, and you're always warm and friendly as you build up the team.

Quality-focused, you work to grow student meal participation while also controlling costs. You maintain excellent client and employee communications in order to improve the quality of our current services, resolve problems, and facilitate new services. With attention to detail, you develop and manage budget expenditures, operational reports, time sheets, payroll matters, work schedules, and more.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A FOOD SERVICE MANAGER

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must have a solid understanding of the culinary arts.
  • At least two (2) years of responsible experience as a chef, chef manager, production manager, or related food service experience
  • Must have a current SERV Safe certification or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
  • The ability to operate basic office equipment and software programs including email and MS Office programs such as Word and Excel
  • Contract requires employees to speak, understand, read, and write English.
  • The position requires a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS' vehicle insurance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in culinary arts or hospitality
  • K-12 food service experience
  • Experience working in rural villages, rural Alaska, or a similar setting

Description of environment: School kitchen and cafeteria environment

Physical requirements: Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Frequently required to walk, stand, lift, pull and push daily. Rarely in cramped or confined spaces and climbing.

Travel: Employee may travel up to 25% to various locations within the U.S. and/or remote locations and may be required to use alternative modes of transportation, including but not limited to snow machines, boats, small airplanes, and ATVs. Travel is coordinated by NMS.
