A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FOOD SERVICE MANAGER

As a Food Service Manager, you direct kitchen operations on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus. You are directly responsible for the successful operation of food service activities including retail, quality improvement, infection control, and sanitation. This unique opportunity is perfect for someone like you who is energetic and highly motivated!

You're a natural leader. Staff members understand their responsibilities and are enabled to do their best work with you there to offer support. Working with other members of the food prep team, you plan a variety of balanced and attractive menus, track inventory, and order supplies. You also implement an effective staff-training program. Other kitchen management duties include interviewing, hiring, and appraising employees on work performance.

You are incredibly organized and detail-oriented. This comes in handy as you create schedules and staff all kitchen locations on campus. Meticulously, you develop and maintain administrative records, such as budget expenditures, timesheets, accounting materials, and more. Ensuring university students, staff members, and guests are well-fed fills you with pride, which is why you're perfect for this kitchen management position!


WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR IN A FOOD SERVICE MANAGER

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Municipality of Anchorage food handler's card or ServSafe certification contingent upon 30 days of hire
  • Culinary associates degree or a degree in a related field
  • At least three (3) years of experience in a leadership role overseeing 20 or more employees
  • Five (5) years of consecutive employment in a food service operation
  • A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS' vehicle insurance policy
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to convey detailed information to multiple individuals/audiences with differing knowledge levels. This role may require strong negotiation and influence, communication with large groups or high-level constituents, representation of the organization, advanced tact, and diplomacy
  • Contract requires employees to speak, understand, read, and write English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in food services/management

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Weather: Indoors, environmentally controlled.

Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually mild to moderate.

Description of environment: Cafeteria environment located in a university campus setting.

Physical requirements: Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, stoop, kneel, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight. Infrequently required to sit, crouch, or crawl. Must frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds.
